Idris Elba as Mumbles
Elba finally got to speak in his natural accent on the big screen in a most appropriate venue, a classically Guy Ritchie UK crime caper, which marks his second film with Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment. No doubt being in his native land speaking in his native voice relaxed Elba a bit, which shows in his portrayal of the ironically rather well-spoken Mumbles. Basically sidekick to lead Gerard Butler, this again is a more secondary part for an esteemed filmmaker, but the relaxed ease shows in his smooth chemistry with Butler and the rest of the ensemble, not to mention in the dry, sly sense of humor and timing he shows here and too rarely gets the chance to display. "Cool" is term I try to not use to describe a film, but that's the most appropriate one for this film and Elba's work in it: laid back, effortless, and a lot of fun.
