Idris Elba as Stone
Elba returned to his native United Kingdom for the sequel to Danny Boyle's virus/zombie thriller 28 Days Later..., but ironically his role called on for him to keep using his now-familiar Yankee accent, playing the small but key part of American military general Stone, who calls on radical practices to contain the ever-increasing viral threat. This is one of those films that, given his increased stature today, people forget Elba was in, but given the limited parameters of the character--stern, authoritative military type--it was perfect cinematic shorthand, if you will, to cast someone of his naturally imposing presence to fill such a fairly small window of screen time. This film is also the first example of Elba's willingness to take smaller parts in order to work with noted and more interesting filmmakers, in this case Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and this strategic practice will prove to serve him well in the future (see next film)...
